The Broken Spur Inn is just minutes from the park entrance, with breakfast, an indoor pool, and an on-site steakhouse.
Capitol Reef has a way of convincing you to keep walking. There is always another canyon, overlook or trail around the corner.
Eventually, though, your legs are going to have other ideas.
Luckily, some of the best things to do near Capitol Reef do not require hiking boots at all. Grab a slice of pie, take the long way back to Torrey, cool off in the pool, settle in for dinner or wait for one of the darkest night skies in the country to appear overhead.
Here are a few ways to keep enjoying the area after the hiking portion of your day is officially over.
You can see quite a bit of Capitol Reef without adding another trail to your day.
The park's Scenic Drive follows 7.9 paved miles through colorful cliffs and the historic Fruita area. The National Park Service recommends allowing about 90 minutes for the round trip if you include the Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge roads.
Roll the windows down, put your feet up when you stop and enjoy being the person watching the scenery instead of climbing through it.

There may be no better post-hike strategy than pie and ice cream.
The historic Gifford House in Fruita sells fresh-baked pies and ice cream when it is open for the season, along with other locally made goods. It is one of those Capitol Reef traditions that is worth working into the day even when you have no interest in another attraction afterward.
Availability can vary, so earlier in the day is generally a better time to stop than waiting until everything else is finished.

After several hours on a dusty trail, jumping into a pool suddenly sounds much more exciting than it did at breakfast.
Guests at the Broken Spur have access to an indoor pool and hot tub, which makes returning to the hotel part of the afternoon rather than simply the point when the day's activities end.
Swim for a while, soak tired legs in the hot tub or head back to your room and do absolutely nothing. You earned it.
You do not need another major attraction to fill the gap between hiking and dinner.
Slow down and explore Torrey for a while. Browse shops, look for local art, grab something cold to drink or simply enjoy having nowhere in particular you need to be.
For travelers searching for things to do in Torrey, Utah, that is worth remembering. Not every hour of a national park trip needs to be scheduled.

By this point, trail mix is no longer going to cut it.
The Broken Spur Steakhouse gives hotel guests the very convenient option of ending the day without getting back in the car. Head over for a proper western dinner, then leave room for cobbler if the day's mileage justifies it.
It is hard to improve on the sequence of hike, pool, steak and dessert.

You do not need to hike several miles for a good Capitol Reef sunset.
The park has scenic pullouts and overlooks that can be enjoyed with minimal walking, making sunset an easy final outing after a more demanding morning. Panorama Point is an especially easy option, located along the route between the Broken Spur Inn and the Capitol Reef entrance and offering wide-open views that are particularly beautiful around sunset. Even the drive through the park becomes a different experience when the cliffs start changing color late in the day.
This is a good time to choose the easiest option available rather than looking for one last trail to squeeze in.
Do not automatically call it a night when the sun goes down.
Capitol Reef stargazing is one of the easiest ways to add another memorable experience to the day without adding any mileage to your hiking total. Capitol Reef was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2015, and the National Park Service identifies several easy-to-access viewing locations, including Panorama Point, Danish Hill and the Fruita Campground Amphitheater parking area.
The park also offers astronomy programs at certain times of year, so check the ranger program calendar while you are visiting.
For a better view, give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness and use a red flashlight when possible. The park also recommends scouting your viewing location during daylight and dressing for cooler nighttime temperatures.

There is a temptation on a national park trip to make every day as productive as possible.
You do not have to.
Capitol Reef will still be there tomorrow. Sometimes the best plan after a long hike is a swim, a big dinner and an early night before doing it all again.
That is part of what makes staying close to the park useful. Broken Spur Inn & Steakhouse is just outside Torrey, so you can spend the morning exploring Capitol Reef and still have plenty of day left when you return.
Kick off your boots, give your legs the rest of the afternoon off and start deciding which trail to hit tomorrow.
